The UK’s largest and most advanced supercomputer has officially come online – and it’s based right here in the South West.
The Isambard-AI machine in Bristol was officially switched on yesterday by Technology Secretary Peter Kyle, and represents a major investment in the UK’s future as a global leader in artificial intelligence.
It’s the latest step in a £1 billion national strategy to expand the country’s computing power twentyfold by 2030 – a move designed to supercharge scientific discovery, medical research and climate innovation.
Capable of performing in a single second what would take the global population 80 years to process manually, Isambard-AI will help support researchers and businesses across the country in accelerating the development of new AI tools and technologies.
But beyond the impressive numbers, this launch is a clear signal of intent. It marks a shift towards building the kind of advanced infrastructure needed to support the next era of digital innovation – and it reinforces just how central AI is expected to be to the UK’s long-term economic success.
Additional growth zones, faster planning routes for data centres, and new supercomputing facilities in Scotland, Wales and Cambridge are all part of the Government’s newly announced Compute Roadmap. This blueprint sets out how the UK will reduce reliance on foreign processing power and ensure that high-level AI capability is available at home.
